Here we go! “Cookie Couture - Specialty Baking Products & Apparel”. Say what!?
I'm just going to say it the best way I know how, and I’m probably going to offend some people. So I’m sorry for that. Kind of....
I get asked to promote products often and 99% of the time I turn the offers down. In a social media world saturated with “influencers” pumping out product endorsements, I quite frankly just don’t want to be one of them.
The community I have created around Corianne’s Custom Cookies isn’t one that I take for granted. This audience, (I feel) has come to trust me and my opinion, and this isn’t something I’m willing to sacrifice for a quick buck on a sale of some product I’ve probably never heard of or used prior.
And let’s be real, I share my knowledge and tips for free. It’s been a significant part of my success to now and I have no problem with doing it, because aside from my core business the goal is to help and inspire others. Truly. My website and blog don’t have a single ad on them. Not a single product I’ve shared has been one I don’t personally use, or from a company I don’t buy from - and it’s going to stay that way because I respect the fact that people come to me as a trusted resource.
So - when I was asked to promote a certain line of apparel, I did what I usually do and gave it a hard pass. It wasn’t a line that I feel is truly connected to the baking community I cater to, and honestly the product wasn’t something I would ever personally wear in my daily life.
We’ve all seen it... a well staged photo with a special offer, hash-tagged #ad #sponsored... I’m sorry, but it’s just not authentic and your supporters deserve more. This isn’t to say there aren’t people out there promoting products they use and believe in - there IS. But there are so many more doing the opposite that it dilutes the strategy as a whole.
*Stepping off my soapbox*...
I was driving along the next day and it hit me. Why don’t I just create a line of clothing and products FOR my community? Clothing I would actually wear and products I use daily and know that others would want to invest in too. I already been selling my scribes, so why not branch out and make it a thing?
I then did what I always do when I have any crazy idea and called my best friend, Brittany. I told her flat out about 3 seconds in to the call, “I think i’m going to make my own clothing and supplies line”... She then gave me THE laugh. The laugh of, “Ohhhh shit, she’s serious - and I fully believe she can do it”. So there it was, they always say to make an idea real you have to say it out loud. Boom, it was real. And seriously, if you don’t have a friend who will blindly support your crazy spur of the moment ideas, you need to find a new friend -mmkay?
Proceeding on in my impulsive ways, I sent a text our friend Sabrina, owner and creator behind clothing lines, Blonde Ambition & Fringe. If you haven’t check her out, you should. I flat out asked if she’d be interested in collaborating, totally assuming she’d pass but as the entrepreneurial gods would have it, she was in the process herself of starting to wholesale her products and instantly was on board. About 2 weeks and 2000 messages later we had our initial designs in place and started production on my first order that is now about to launch! It’s taken another few weeks and a lot of work to brand and prepare the online side of business. The few spare moments I’ve had have all gone towards getting this up and running. And the same friend with the “oooh shit” laugh is also the one who helped me brainstorm business names, and took her previous graphic design experience to make my vision for the logo happen.
So a HUGE thank you goes out to Brittany and Sabrina, I couldn’t have done any of this without the support, encouragement and contributions of these two women. It holds a lot of meaning for me to have started this all with their help.
What’s next? I do have a vision. New products are definitely a part of it. Continuing making cookies, teaching classes and providing resources for others is also my priority. I’m a firm believer that you can have your cookie and eat it too, so I look forward to doing it all, authentically - for you. Because every single one of you who supports what I do, are the reason I do it. So thank you!
